A Thousand Splendid Suns

A salutation to Mariam…the Madam

Her lingering presence…
The moment when she knelt before her death…
Obeying for the last time…

Yes, she obeyed…but by choice…
For the first time in her life….

A sacrifice for the good…
A painful journey…
Leading to an end satisfactory…

Yes, she was a harami…
A mask for the outside world..
But a shaheed from within…

A symbol of compassion…
Of courage and temperament..
Of acceptance of reality…
Or to say, of selfless service…

Imbibed within, a never complaining soul…

You….yes you madam…
Were a soldier…
Died like a martyr…
Deserved even better that Ahmed and Noor…

An inspiration, you were…
For you made me want to believe in the illusional concept of another birth…

A birth where you’ll be loved…
A birth of luxuries dwelling in a fairy tale…

And still you’ll be the one…
With that everlasting wisdom that distinguished you from the rest.
